A team of eleven local fundraisers from Hastings and surrounding area have taken on a 100k night bike ride from London to Brighton, raising £3,000 for Cancer Research UK.
The cyclists, who work at Medica Group, Havelock Road, Hastings, rode through the night for 8 hours on September 26.
The epic ride began at Smithfield’s Market, London and ended at Hove Park School, Brighton.
The team was made up of seasoned professionals who train and compete on a regular basis, who set the pace for a handful of ‘newbies’, some of whom purchased a bike specifically for the event.
Paul Hickford said the team of newbies struggled hard throughout training, sustaining injuries and falling during the race. “Luckily this only resulted in a few scrapes and grazes,” he said. “Exhausted, grazed and chilled to their very core, the team pushed on through the night and completed the race at 7am.
Paul says there were other elements that added to the gruelling 100k ride. “It was certainly a challenge. The cold was our biggest enemy. As the course was so hilly, you’d get quite warm powering up the hills, but then become painfully chilly on the descents – even with every zip done up! Some downhill speeds were well over 30mph. That said, it was super to have eleven of us in the team – and most of us can’t wait for next year
“Thanks a bundle to all those who have donated so far.”
Martin Wells, Medica Operations Director Hastings said: “Team Medica extend a huge ‘thank you’ to those who have donated so far. Together the team made it through this tough challenge to fund life-saving research to help more men, women and children in East Sussex and across the UK survive the disease.”
To date the team has raised £3,000 of their £4,000 target. To donate visit: www.justgiving.com/teams/Team-MEDICA-2015..
