Charity in search for volunteers to engage with the elderly and lonely

A CHARITY is looking for volunteers to bring a little cheer to lonely elderly people.

Engage South East, whose registered office is in St Margarets Road, St Leonards is looking for people to help with its service where day opportunities are provided for older people.

A range of specially designed recreational activities such as art and craft, music appreciation and reminiscence sessions encourage clients to engage with each other and try something new, and the volunteer role is essential to support staff and encourage clients to participate.

Rachel Lewis, chief executive, said: “Sadly, there are many older people in the community who are isolated and lonely. When they come to Engage for the day, it’s an opportunity for them to relax in the company of others, enjoy a nice meal, learn something new and above all have a great deal of fun and laughter.

“If you enjoy arts and crafts or singing or cooking and like chatting with others and sharing a joke, why not think about becoming a volunteer for just a few hours a week. Engage are also looking for volunteer drivers and cooks.” No special qualifications or experience are needed, just the desire to make participants feel at ease together with an up-to-date CRB check, which is handled by the charity. A full induction is given and volunteers benefit from ongoing training and out of pocket expenses. To find out more about volunteering, ring Josephine Darville on 07902 2855471 for an informal chat.
