Call the compost doctor

From fruit peelings to wormery bins, the pupils of Glyne Gap school have been learning all about making and using their own compost.

They are taking part in the Compost Doctor scheme and found how they can help the environment by recycling everyday waste to make compost.

Teachers Melanie Juckes, responsible for supervising the school council, and Hollie Wood, who runs the Eco-club, encouraged the pupils through the process of making compost.

Melanie said: "Sarah Rideout from the Compost Doctor scheme came in to talk about compost, and did a workshop with the children to show them how many things you get compost out of from a bag of rubbish.

"There is a compost caddy for each class now for children to put their bits of rubbish in, like their fruit peelings from break times.

"Also we have this beautiful pink Roly Pig in our wildflower garden, which is like this giant pig that you roll, and someone from each class will take their compost caddy out and empty it in the Roly Pig.

Home visits can be booked for the Compost Doctor for 2. The project is funded by East Sussex County Council.
