Call for drug users to help beat addiction

PEOPLE in West Sussex who misuse drugs or alcohol are being urged to play a key role in shaping the services designed to help them.

West Sussex Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) is launching a project '“ called Exact '“ that will actively consult with its clients and build upon their experiences.

Brian Morgan, Project Co-ordinator, said: "We want to hear from the people who use '“ or have used '“ drug and alcohol services because they are the experts.

"They know what does and doesn't work well for them. They know what improvements need to be made. That's why their voices need to be heard.

"The Exact project will give them that voice plus the opportunity to make real and sustainable changes to the services and support they receive from the DAAT."

Part of the project will involve Brian visiting drug and alcohol centres in West Sussex to meet and talk with current and former clients.

"I'll be encouraging people who use the services to share their experiences and their knowledge with me."

Peter Catchpole, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Adult Services, said: "I would urge anyone using a drug and alcohol service within West Sussex to get involved in the Exact project.

"By sharing your experiences and voicing your opinions, the DAAT will be able to develop 'user-centre services' tailored to your needs."

Current and former users of DAAT services are invited to attend Exact's official launch on Friday September 18 at Barn Field Place, Durrington-on-Sea.

The day long event '“ which is free '“ will include:

Developing a new charter for drug and alcohol service users. "We'll be wanting to hear what people think the Charter should and should not contain," said Brian.

Talks from new and recognised user groups.

"There will also be plenty of opportunities for people to have their say about what happens in our county for drug and alcohol service users," said Brian.

Drug and alcohol service users wishing to attend the launch can call or text 07545 201594 to book a place, or email [email protected]. Payment for train or bus travel will be provided.
