Contest open to women entrepreneurs

THE Tomorrow’s Business Builders Award, which was launched in Hastings last year, is back to give promising female entrepreneurs the chance to win £5,000 to get their business off the ground.

The competition is open to women living in Hastings or St Leonards, aged 25 years or over.

It is supported by Tomorrow’s People, Amber Rudd MP, Ashdown Hurrey Accountants and Let’s Do Business.

The deadline for applications is December 9.

Ms Rudd said: “Last year’s competition was a great success, all of the candidates found the whole process extremely beneficial.

“I hope that any woman with even just the seed of a business idea will apply, as this really is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

“We just can’t afford to overlook the talents, skills and experience of women from Hastings any longer – that’s why I am supporting this competition.”

In addition, on November 4 the Home Secretary and Minister for Women and Equalities, Theresa May, announced that funding will be provided for 5,000 mentors to support new and existing female entrepreneurs. Currently women are only half as likely as men to become entrepreneurs.

She said: “If we fully used the skills and qualifications of women who are currently out of work, it could deliver economic benefits of 15 to 21 billion pounds per year.

“That’s more than double the value of all our annual exports to China.”
