Businessman petitions for St Leonards transport link

A BUSINESSMAN has handed in a 1,000-signature petition to the council asking for help in creating a seafront transport link between the Old Town and West St Leonards.

Naz Uddin, who runs the Bengal Curry House in Marine Court, is campaigning for the link after noticing a sharp decline in visitors to his end of town.

He has suggested extending the Hastings Miniature Rail link along the sea front to West St Leonards which would cost several hundred thousand pounds.

Mr Uddin claims the moving of Hastings College to the Station Plaza and the lack of tourist attractions in his area are having a major impact on footfall.

He said: “I started this petition because I feel we are being neglected in this part of town.

“We need something like a rail or bus shuttle to bring people down here from the Old Town and Hastings town centre.

“Nobody comes here any more. Even the Language School has moved from the sea front to Pevensey Road which means less foreign students come along the sea front.

“Business here is particularly poor especially in the current economic climate.

“A transport link such as a rail extension or even a bus shuttle might help stimulate business here and encourage people to visit us.”
