A cake designer who has worked for the stars on Broadway is setting up a workshop in Hastings.
Katja Seaton, from London, has being making cupcakes for nearly 20 years and is a graduate of the Camberwell College of Arts.
She took a three year apprenticeship at the famous Cupcake Café situated in Manhattan where she designed confectioneries for Broadway shows, television, politicians and celebrities.
Katja said: ‘’When I worked at the Cupcake Café we regularly designed, crafted and created couture cakes for Broadway shows, television, celebrities and politicians alike. It was not unusual to find a film star enjoying a quick cupcake in the shop which at the time was situated in Hell’s Kitchen.
“I really enjoyed working in the US and often found myself designing and creating cakes for regular clients such as Madonna, Oprah Winfrey and Sir Alan Sugar and recently was asked to design and bake for one of the contestants on Celebrity Masterchef. My first creation was for Linda Evangalista.”
Returning to England to start her own business, Katja lived in Stockport for 16 years. The move to Hastings came about by chance when Katja and her husband Howard delivered a wedding order to Wadhurst Castle. They decided to have lunch by the sea in Hastings before heading home but their visit to the town was enough to convince them that Hastings was where they wanted to be.
Katja said: “Sitting on the Beach at The Stade, eating fish and chips followed by a quick ice cream and wander round Old Town was enough to convince us that Hastings was where we wanted to be! It has such a great atmosphere and an interesting history.
“Hastings has a lot to offer with so much going on, a lot of character and a little quirkiness that makes it an exciting place to be of which is a good fit for Katja’s Cakes.
“It’s a big move and a little bit scary. We found a workshop before we had anywhere to live! Now we’re busy working on establishing Katja’s Cakes in the South. I really hope we can eventually become one of the mainstays of Hastings’ brilliant community.”
Katja’s Cakes is based at Brook Way Business Park, off Ivyhouse Lane. For more information, including booking bespoke classes, visit www.katjascakes.co.uk.
