BREAKING NEWS: Friday the 13th fire tears through roof

PICTURES: A family escaped a blaze which tore through the roof of their house, after a passer-by hammered on the front door.

Firefighters were called to the house in Beaumont Road, Worthing, at around 7.30am '“ on unlucky Friday the 13th.

Crews from across the area attended, including those from Worthing, Findon, Shoreham and Lancing.

Eyewitnesses said flames could be seen coming from the roof at the rear of the house. Neighbour Ian Clements, 46, was working nearby when he saw smoke billowing from the house.

He told the Herald: "The next moment my phone rang and it was my wife. I couldn't see where the smoke was coming from '“ I thought it was my house."

A fire investigation officer was at the scene and the family were being looked after by the Red Cross. Nobody was injured.
