Emergency services are asking residents living around the waste centre in Bexhill Road, St Leonards, to keep their windows and doors closed for the next few hours due to a chemical incident.
The tip at Freshfields is currently closed and has been evacuated after a strong smell of ammonia today (Thursday, May 14).
Six people have been taken ill.
They are being treated by ambulance crews.
There is a cordon around the tip area and people living nearby are being told to close their windows and doors as a precaution.
