Best gardeners' prize all thanks to South Bersted school

Seven-year-old Fleur is holding the first civic award presented in the annual Bognor in Bloom competition.

It was awarded by the Bognor in Bloom working party in recognition of the work of South Bersted CE Primary School in receiving its coveted national Green Flag earlier this year.

Vegetable beds and a conservation area are among the works which have been carried out within the school's Church Lane grounds to create a blooming good show.

The cup has been given pride of place in the school's reception. It was among the awards presented at a Bognor in Bloom night at the town hall.

The gathering also celebrated the town's progress in achieving a silver-gilt rating in the 2008 South and South East in Bloom competition for the first time in several years.

Cllr Jason Passingham, the chairman of the Bognor in Bloom working party, said: "A lot of work went into this year's campaign by so many people.

"So, it was nice for us to have an evening where we could enjoy and reflect on what has been a very successful year.

"We already have a lot of ideas for 2009 when we really will be pulling out all the stops to get the elusive gold status.

"In addition, we will be marking our local competition along Royal Horticultural Society lines. Everyone who enters will get certificates for bronze, silver, silver-gilt and gold."

All winners and runners-up in the 2008 competition received certificates.

Some also walked away with shields or trophies sponsored by organisations and companies in the town. Among them were the civic society, chamber of commerce, seafront lights and iResolutions website design.

A total of 11 certificates of excellence awarded by the South and South East in Bloom judges were also presented. These recognised outstanding contributions to the town's campaign or the fact the judges had been particularly impressed when they inspected the town back in July.

Best licensed premises: 1 '“ The William Hardwick; 2 '“ The White Horse.

Best commercial frontage: 1 '“ Waterloo Square mini golf; 2 '“ White House Dental Care.

Best commercial tub/basket/box: 1 '“ Bognor Regis fire station; 2 '“ The Arcade.

Best sheltered/ residential accommodation: 1 '“ Bickleys Court; 2 '“ Arran Gate, Royal Bay (Aldwick Rd).

Best street: 1 '“ St Winifrid's Close; 2 '“ Ivy Lane.

Best residential balcony: 1 '“ Eric Carey, Marine Drive West; 2 '“ Mrs Davies, Mountbatten Court.

Best large front garden: 1 '“ Mr J Waring, Brooks Lane; 2 '“ Mrs CH Simpson, Orchard Way.
