TWO friends got into character to raise funds for children in a Mexican orphanage where they are to spend time as volunteers.

In full Mexican costume Samantha Earwaker, 22, of The Ridge, and Rebecca Chidwick, 21, of Elphinstone Road, walked from Hastings Pier to Eastbourne Pier on Saturday, September 10, a distance of around 20 miles, raising more than £400 in sponsorship.

The best friends are heading to Mexico in November for six months, to help out in an orphanage in the city of Merida.

Samantha said: “When we were doing the walk we got a big reaction. There were loads of photos taken, and everyone was beeping.”

One passer-by even donated money on the spot after hearing about the good cause.

The money raised from their sponsored walk will go towards buying some of the materials that the children need on a daily basis, including arts and crafts materials, games and toys.

Samantha and Rebecca are both support workers at Mary House, The Ridge, a care home for disabled young adults. Wanting to spend time abroad as volunteers, they decided upon a project run by Original Volunteers.

While in Mexico, they will be staying in a house with other volunteers, and helping out at the orphanage for four hours a day.

Samantha said: “We’ve never done anything like this before, and I’m really excited. I’m looking forward to making a difference, and putting a smile on their faces.”

Any donations are welcome, as they want to take as much as possible out to the orphanage. Email Samantha at
