A CYCLIST is embarking on an 800-mile bike ride across France and Spain today (Friday) as a thank you to those who helped him battle cancer.
Bertram Wilkins, 66, of Beachy Head View, is pedalling from Bilbao in Spain to St Malo in France and expects the trek to last at least three weeks. The keen cyclist is raising money for The Prostate Cancer Charity, as he was diagnosed with the disease two-and-a-half years ago.
Mr Wilkins, who is doing the ride with his friend Jeff Alexander, from Horsham, said: “The cancer I had was an aggressive one and because it was inoperable I underwent radiotherapy at Maidstone hospital and other treatment at the Conquest Hospital. I’ve raised around £1,300 to date but I would like to raise at least £2,000 and would be pleased if I could nudge it to this total.”
Mr Wilkins has cycled since he was a schoolboy and he and his wife Marie and him have travelled across France and Spain many times so he knows the terrain well.
