Beggar brought before court

A MAN admitted begging in the streets of St Leonards when he appeared before magistrates in court.

Danny Richardson, 45, pleaded guilty at a hearing last Monday (October 8) to two counts of begging.

During September, PC Alan Heath received lots of complaints about a beggar asking for money in the lower St Leonards area.

Though he was not aggressive, he would ask lone women for money once they had parked their cars, his presence making them feel uncomfortable.

Richardson, unemployed, of Chapel Park Road, St Leonards, was arrested on suspicion of begging on September 22, He was charged and bailed to appear at court.

While on bail, he was arrested again, at his home address, on Tuesday, October 2, for the same offence after more complaints were reported.

Richard received a six-month conditional discharge.

PC Heath said: “Begging is unacceptable, it is a quality of life issue for the local residents who have to endure the constant requests for money. I will be actively seeking to disrupt anyone else begging in the area and if you would like to report any incidents please tell me or call Sussex Police on 101.”
