Beckley School Log Book Quote: May 1877-Mr F O’Connell wrote “The attendance was a shade better in the upper class. Some few parents either sent the children or a civil reply. Others simply ignored the note I sent, requesting children to attend School, and a few sent offensive messages. The lower part of the School being rather well attended I put the Pupil Teacher to the Fifth Class (Infants) thus enabling the Assistant Mistress to devote her whole time to the First Standard. With the assistance of a temporary monitor I have attended to the Upper Standards. “
