Time is running short if you want to join the annual torchlight procession at the spectacular Hastings bonfire and firework display in October.

To take part, you have to be a member of Hastings Borough Bonfire Society and the Society only accepts new members and renewals up to August 31. Anyone who isn’t a member will not be allowed to join the parade.

This is a special year as well, as HBBS is celebrating its 21st bonfire on the beach. And they are promising that it will be the best yet.

This year’s extravaganza will take place on October 17, which is the last Saturday of Hastings Week.

HBBS has to raise more than £16,000 to put on this spectacular event. It is a major, established feature of the Hastings tourism calendar and brings thousands of people into the town.

But the vast majority of the funding is raised by the volunteer members of the Society. And they are asking for help.

A large proportion of the money raised is spent on insurance and security for the vast bonfire and fireworks site on Pelham Beach. But, commercial vehicles have to be hired, namely a flat bed and Luton type as well as a load all/all terrain forklift and a JCB to help build the bonfire.

Pallets are also required to form the base of the bonfire itself, but they would need to be brought to the firesite at Pelham Car Park.

HBBS chairman, Nick Lynas, says: “Remember that without the dedicated members giving their time and their ability to fundraise, plan, organise and build, this amazing event would not take place.”

Nick asks that if anyone can help supply or contribute to the hire of these vehicles they contact him on

Membership is £15 per adult or £30 for a family. Full details and application form are on the HBBS website, HBBS@info with payment accepted by cash, cheque, bank transfer and PayPal.
