DESPITE clashing with the mighty Lewes Bonfire, Battel Bonfire Boyes yet again put on another fantastic event this year.

Although the procession was slightly shorter as several of the usual visiting bonfire societies took part in the event at Lewes, the number of spectators seemed to be unaffected.

And there was a welcome jump in the amount raised in charity street collection, which will be distributed between local charities and good causes.

A grand total of £5,867.45 was raised – up by around £1,800 on last year’s collection.

The thousands of spectators enjoyed the annual procession, with bonfire societies from Rother well-represented, before heading to the battlefield to see thousands of pounds worth of fireworks light up the night sky.

A new designer created this year’s effigy, which was a comment on the recent News of the World phone hacking scandal.
