Baker and wife mark 60 happy years of marriage

A MASTER baker, who once made wedding and birthday cakes for celebrities, and his wife are celebrating 60 happy years of marriage together.

Herbert and Iris Parker, of Old Roar Road, St Leonards, were treated to a meal at the Mermaid Inn in Rye by family and friends and received a card from the Queen.

The couple tied the knot on November 3, 1951 in Putney Hill, London.

Mrs Parker first met her future husband when she was 13.

At the time he delivered cookers and other appliances to people’s homes.

Mrs Parker then did not see her husband-to-be until she was 15 when she was introduced by his brother and sister-in-law.

After the couple married they moved to Wandsworth and lived there for 47 years before coming to Hastings in 2007.

Mrs Parker was a secretary at Harrods in Knightsbridge at the time she and her husband moved to Wandsworth and served as a baker for the RAF.

After that he made wedding and birthday cakes for famous people like Cilla Black and Michael Aspel.

The couple have six children and more than 30 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
