A NEWLY-BORN seal plucked out of the sea off Jersey and brought to Mallydams RSPCA wildlife centre with its umbilical cord still exposed, is recovering well.

Believed to have been separated from its mother in stormy weather, the seal - now six-weeks-old - is being force-fed 3.5kg of herring every day at the centre in Fairlight until it reaches a target weight of 40kg.

It will be released back into the wild in a couple of months from Pett Level. There are currently five seals being rehabilitated in the rescue centre.
