Average speed camera to be installed on St Leonards seafront

A traffic camera measuring motorists' average speed is to be installed on St Leonards seafront.

The average speed camera (ASC) will be installed between the Marina and Grosvenor Crescent and will be one of the first two permanent ASCs in the country, with the other being in Brighton.

The site already has a fixed safety camera, but this will be replaced with the ASC. Sussex Safer Roads Partnership (SSRP) is overseeing the implementation of the camera.

On a recent week-long survey carried out in July 2016, it was found that in St Leonards, two per cent of drivers were above 36mph at the Marina and 6.8 per cent were above 36mph at Grosvenor Crescent.

The aim of the ASCs are to improve compliance to the speed limits, and improve congestion, commuter times, and safety.

Installation will take place on St Leonards seafront between the Marina and Grosvenor Square on December 19 and 20. The site is anticipated to go live early next year, but there will be warnings in place advising motorists of any updates as the project progresses.

The existing camera housings will remain in situ until the average speed enforcement system becomes operative.
