Roger Crouch, the man behind the hugely successful Pirate Day festivities, has come up with the idea as a means of getting the whole town involved.

This year’s Pirate Day will be on Sunday, July 16 and the plans to design the huge flag are just one of many attractions pencilled in as part of the festivities.

Roger said: “The plan is to have a huge skull and crossbones flag, especially designed uniquely for Hastings Pirate Day.

“Everyone then can bring their own flag, either made or purchased and tailored with their own name, organisation, school and so on to be attached to the outside of the main flag so it can build up on all four sides.

Pirates who have contributed to the community flag can then carry it filmed from the air at Pelham beach in what will be an amazing sight.

“Timings and dates, even on the day when the flag will be constructed have yet to be announced.

“The flag will be awesome and I think it’ll attract huge media attention. It will be made by the community, making it so special.”

Roger said last year’s Pirate Day celebrations were a ‘huge success’, which he hopes can be built on for this year.

Speaking about the plans for the huge pirate flag, Roger said: “It’s one of those crazy ideas I came up with, but they tend to always work out.”

Last year, tens of thousands of seadogs, buccaneers and pirates descended on the town to take part in Pirate Day, with the newly-opened pier seeing more than 15,000 visitors, as it played host to a wide range of pirate-themed activities and attractions.

Renowned aviator and airshow commentator Brendan O’Brien also made a flying visit in his helicopter.

This year, other attractions so far pencilled in for Pirate Day 2017 include Mermaid Cove in the Old Town, where people can dress up as mermaids.

A symphony orchestra will also be playing pirate-themed music on the Stade Open Space, and there will be plenty of bands playing live pirate-themed music.
