Arun District Council in £35k bid to allow empty shop to be used by local artists

A bid for £35,000 is being made to encourage property landlords in central Bognor Regis to allow an empty shop to be used by artists.

Arun District Council is making the application to the Coastal West Sussex group. If it succeeds, it will enable the council to negotiate a lease for premises to become a creative centre.

Lucy Knott, the council's Bognor regeneration task force research and development officer, said: "On witnessing the success of the first scheme, we believe many property owners will be keen to participate."

Backing for the bid was given by the Bognor sub-committee of the council. It needs to be approved by the cabinet of senior councillors before it can be officially made.

Ms Knott said it was hoped enabling artists or graphic designers to occupy a high-profile property would act as a spur to others to join them as well as bring new life to a vacant unit.

Talks with landlords had failed to produce an offer of premises because of interest in shops from retailers or hopes the economy would soon revive, she added.
