Are you ready for the BIG Eat?

This weekend sees Bexhill Old Town's harvest celebration with a difference - the BIG Eat will be held at St Peter's Community Centre on Saturday afternoon.

Around 200 people of all ages attended this hugely enjoyable event last year and organisers are hoping this time will be even better.

The project started months back when Captain Courgette and Professor Pumpkin visited local primary schools in the spring to encourage the children to grow their own vegetables.

The Captain and the Professor have been returning to those schools this week to see how they have been getting on and to encourage them to show off their produce at the BIG Eat.

The Food Fair at St Peter's Community Centre will feature various vegetable competitions and a chance to sample the produce.

The BIG Sow team is asking anyone who has any spare garden produce to drop it off at the community centre in the morning and a crack team of chefs from St Peter's church will turn it into something wonderful to eat at tea time.

The BIG Eat kicks off in the church with a very short service of thanksgiving for all ages in which the vegetable creations will be presented at the altar before being hurriedly returned to the Community Centre to be devoured by hungry visitors.

The delicious dishes will be washed down with juice pressed on the premises from garden windfalls of apples and pears - so bring any spare fruit you may have too.

All this will be accompanied by live music and interspersed with puppet and magic shows.

Everyone is welcome to the BIG Eat, which is free and begins at 4:15 pm on Saturday September 19 at St Peter's Community Centre and ends at 6:30 pm.

The community centre will be open for vegetable drop-offs from 9-11 am on the morning of the event.
