Hospitality Manager Julie Hannah has seen her workforce transformed since taking on her first Sussex Downs College apprentice in 2014.

She said: “The apprentices have had a positive impact on the day to day running of the business, the financial side of the business and the future of the business.”

Julie added: “With so many graduates looking for work, many employers are seeking experience and qualifications, and this is where I feel the apprenticeship scheme really comes into its own.

“It offers young people the chance to earn whilst they learn, and with the current government support offering funding and opportunities right up to degree level, apprenticeships are finally offering a real alternative to university.”

Julie currently has four apprentices and is about to welcome two more to the events team at Crowhurst Park.

According to Julie the apprentices that have joined the team have helped to increase morale, motivation, productivity. Furthermore they have increased staff retention, helping to reduce the high turnover of staff that generally plagues the hospitality and events industry.

She said: “All of our apprentices have a genuinely positive relationship with their assessors and look forward to their visits. I know my apprentices have constant support, not just from myself and the business, but also from the college and I watch them increase in confidence every week.

“It’s brilliant to know that the Sussex Downs College Business Development Team are there to support me also. I know I always have someone on hand to offer advice or help at any time”.

Julie’s enthusiasm for embracing apprenticeships has also led to a personal achievement. After presenting at the Eastbourne You’re Hired event last year, Julie was approached by a representative of the Skills Funding Agency and was later invited to become East Sussex’s Apprentice Ambassador.

In this voluntary role, she is able to promote apprenticeships and help spread awareness across East Sussex. According to Julie, “Every Ambassador is genuinely passionate about engaging with more apprentices and employers to spread the message that no matter who you are and what you do, there will be an Apprenticeship that can help.” Apprentices in the South East really are achieving amazing things!”
