The Hastings and Rother YMCA needs more than £100,000 to refurbish one of its community centres.

The Y Centre, St Paul’s Road, St Leonards, needs a lot of repair work including replacing the floor for £23,000.

Chairman Judith Monk said she wished there was some sort of DIY SOS for charities to help them get back on their feet.

“It’s an early 1970s building which over the years has started to decay and when you’re trying to run a charity and get funding, it’s really difficult to maintain,” she said.

“General maintenance is hard to do in this climate so we’re appealing to any building organisation locally who would be willing to donate something or get involved and give us a hand.”

Judith said the centre is used by 800 people every week including fitness clubs, sports teams and youngsters just for recreation.

She said the badminton club were forced to leave because the floor was not good enough which was a big loss.

The Lions club have donated but Judith said they need more to fix the centre.

“Gensing is a very deprived area so we want to keep it affordable so people can use it but we have no surplus to maintain the centre,” she said.

“I’ve been involved for 33 years and the people who volunteer for us put their heart and soul into the place but we can’t keep up with it all.

“There’s been a lot of bad press about charities lately but people need to support their little, local charities because we don’t get a lot of help.”

The centre has been used by the community for 40 years and desperately needs support to bring it up to scratch.

“If it was brought up to certain standards it will continue as an affordable venue for people who don’t have much money to keep fir and enjoy themselves,” Judith said.
