AN ALLEYWAY in St Leonards has been named in memory of a well-loved resident.

The walkway, which links the bottom of Aldborough Road to Newgate Road, was formally named Vera’s Walk on Saturday (April 19) at a ceremony in honour of Vera Chalcraft, who died 10 years ago aged 72.

Residents from the area came together to celebrate the completion of a project, led by Bohemia Area Association (BAA) with support from the borough council, to improve and clear the alleyways in surrounding streets.

The unveiling of Vera’s Walk was part of the project.

Vera’s widower Vic Chalcraft, 87, who lives in Aldborough Road, led the ceremony alongside Mayor Alan Roberts.

He said his late wife was fondly remembered by many local people as she spent her whole life living and working in Bohemia and was a kind and reassuring presence in Blooms Pharmacy for more than 50 years.

Before cutting the ribbon and declaring the alleyway open, Vic told the assembled crowd of 60 residents and traders that Vera walked the alleyway most days of her life, either to take the children to school, exercise the dogs or visit friends and family.

Peter Holland, chairman of BAA, thanked everyone for their involvement in the project, which has resulted in seven alleyways and twittens being cleared and named in this manner.
