Food consisted of Forties’ staples like fish paste sandwiches, Spam sandwiches, jam sandwiches and squash as well as jelly.

Among those present at the two-hour party outside the branch’s Hewarts Lane premises last Saturday was Amelie Nicolson, seven.

She said: “I’m having fun. I enjoyed pinning the tail on the donkey.”

Branch vice-chairman Peter Farrell said: “This has been worthwhile doing because VJ Day was the end of the second world war.

“That’s the important

“An event like this is about putting the Legion in the minds of the people who live around here.”

The branch also held a
VJ Day dance in the evening.
