But it is almost certain the application for a 22,000-seater stadium for Village Way North will be called by the government for a public inquiry.

Cllr Tom Carr of Falmer Parish Council said there were dozens of possible alternative sites, including Brighton Station and Wild Park.

But Cllr Peter Willows said Falmer was Albion's best ever opportunity to advance its footballing fortunes.

Lewes District Council remains firmly against the development which it says would scar the environment and be an eyesore on the Downs.

The Society of Sussex Downsmen is also press for a public inquiry.
