CHILDREN at Red Lake school now have their very own pirate raft, which was officially launched by Mayor Kim Forward.

The raft was built by Michael Blaney, a parent of one of the pupils in The Rabbits class, at the request of teacher Heather Mardell as the class topic is “pirates”.

He said: “Apart from the ship’s wheel and the screws and paint needed for construction, the raft has been made entirely from recycled materials, including old pallet-wood, a pine bed frame, beams from a house renovation, and even an old bed sheet (for the flag).

“The message I wanted to get across to the children was that useful and fun items can be made from recycled materials.”

Teacher Heather Mardell said: “It is absolutely brilliant, the children have really enjoyed playing on it.”

To celebrate the launch, the children dressed as pirates and boarded the raft.
