Adult social care cuts: Drug and alcohol prevention services

East Sussex County Council is proposing to make savage cuts to its adult social care budget in order to make £40m of savings over the next three years.

The local authority currently has a budget of £6,162,000 for drug and alcohol prevention services across East Sussex but the council wants to slash £788,000 off this total in 2016/17.

LASARS: The Local Area Single Assessment and Referrals Service, which costs ESCC £457,000 a year, could cease if councillors decide to pull funding from the scheme.

LASARS carries out initial assessments for each client, as well as developing initial recovery plans and brokering access into appropriate treatment pathways, including residential rehabilitation.

The council has also unveiled plans to cap its funding of STAR at £4m.

The service, which provides treatment and supports recovery for people with drug and/or alcohol issues, usually costs the authority between £3.5m and £5m.
