3rd Bexhill Scouts collection at Sainsbury's

Shaking their collection tins outside Sainsbury's on Saturday were the youngsters and leaders of 3rd Bexhill Scouts.

They took turns to do one hour shifts throughout the day, with around 50 taking part, including parents, beavers, cubs, scouts and explorers.

Helen Hollick, assistant beaver leader, said that different scout groups were being given the chance to fundraise at Sainsbury's over a two-week period as part of a nationwide initiative.

She commented: "We have just paid for a new scout van which was 8,000, so we are collecting now to top our funds up again because we always need to buy camping equipment, or various other equipment.

"But the scout van is a very important item because we have to take a lot of people with a lot of supplies, so it is crucial...the last van failed its MOT dismally, so we had to get a new one."

Chris Miles, Group Chairman of 3rd Bexhill Scouts, which is the largest group in the Senlac Disctrict, added that funds are needed to pay for supporting scouts going to large jamborees such as one recently held in Chelmsford.

"Scouting gives them a fantastic experience of life," he said.

Helen felt shoppers at Sainsbury's had responded well to their collection on Saturday.

She said: "It has been very good. The tins have been emptied once already and they are still heavy. The people shopping here, mainly older ones today, have been saying it is nice to see the children in an organisation still taking part and being polite and happy. They have all liked seeing the children taking part and looking smart in their uniforms."
