20mph WILL BE THE LIMIT

THE towns of Lewes and Heathfield could become the focus of a pilot scheme involving a new approach to introducing 20mph zones in residential areas and shopping streets.

The move follows a review which concluded that there should be more 20mph limits in East Sussex, but recommends a cheaper way of introducing them.

Traditionally, a combination of signs and engineering measures are used to force drivers to slow down; but these are expensive and the county council only has the resources for a limited number of traffic calming schemes each year.

The new approach is based on taking the clutter out of streets, creative road signing and psychological measures such as removing traditional road markings to make the road appear narrower.

Cllr Godfrey Daniel, chairman of the county council's scrutiny committee for transport, said: 'Reducing speeds and making roads safer is one of the council's top priorities.

'We think it is time to send a clear message to drivers that 20mph is the appropriate speed limit for many of our residential and shopping streets.'

The findings of the review will now be reported to the council's cabinet.

A final report will then be submitted to the full county council for a decision on whether to pilot the approach and how it should be financed.

If the council agrees to pilot the scheme, a significant factor in selecting an area will be the demand and support from residents which is an essential element for success.
