Hastings Pier - devastated by fire
Hastings Pier - devastated by fire

HASTINGS Pier was almost destroyed as fire ravaged the 138-year-old attraction. Hundreds of people gathered to watch the Victorian structure go up in flames - with the Observer publishing an eight page commemorative pull-out.

THE town finally got some good news as the Observer revealed insurance firm Saga was taking over One Priory Square and creating 800 new jobs.

A POODLE saved his owner from a fire after pulling back her bedsheets and barking in her face. Joanne Kilburn was full or praise for her persistent pooch Oliver after the fire in Mill Lane.

A BEAMING youngster from St Leonards beat 25,000 other smiling tots to win a major modelling contract. Harley Manu, one, also scooped a £1,000 shopping spree in Mothercare.

THE link road looked destined for the scrap-heap after the £100million project was put on the funding back-burner. The three mile stretch was put in doubt after the Government began making serious cuts.

Sporting highlight: Tristan Curtis claimed a glorious gold medal at the Special Olympics European Summer Games. The talented 20-year-old took first place in the 400m - finishing in a personal best time.
