Recreating spirit of bathing pool

Preview: FLOW by Janet Harding, old bathing pool site, Grosvenor Gardens, St Leonards. September 9 to 16, 9am to sunset. Free.

Part of the Coastal Currents festival programme, FLOW, is the personal response of artist Janet Harding to the site on the site in Grosvenor Gardens, St Leonards, where the pool once stood.

It will open with a community picnic on Saturday, September 8, to run from noon to 5pm, and the installation of 300 beautifully hued, silk flags.

The artwork will be in place until September 16, and the invitation is open to everyone to go along and celebrate the considerable beauty of the great outdoors.

When built in 1933 the bathing pool was the second largest in Europe, filled with unheated sea water, with an accent on fresh air, exercise and well-being, and FLOW aims to echo this.

A small programme of free events will accompany the artwork.

This includes Tai Chi on Sunday, September 9 and 16, from 10.30am to noon, on September 16 from 4pm, Flashdance (1/2 hour of your own music played through your own ipod), and at 4.30pm a Mediative Low tide Walk and Draw.

There will also be a gathering of oral histories related to the bathing pool.
