Operas straight from festival to big screen

Three operas from Glyndebourne Festival are to be shown as live broadcasts at the De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill, this summer.

They will be screened in the auditorium.

The first, on Tuesday June 4 will be Ariadne auf Naxos. The 2013 Glyndebourne Festival opens with a new production of this compelling and intricately crafted collaboration between composer Richard Strauss and writer Hugo von Hofmannsthal.

It is sung in German with English surtitles.

On Thursday, July 25, Hippolyte et Aricie will come to the DLWP.

Hippolyte et Aricie was French composer Rameau’s first work for the stage, written when he was nearly 50.

It is Glyndebourne’s first production of an opera by Rameau, and is sung in French with English surtitles.

The series will end with Don Pasquale on Tuesday, August 6.

Don Pasquale is the 64th of Donizetti’s 66 operas, and was written only a year before the onset of dementia that was eventually to overwhelm him. It is sung in Italian with English surtitles
