Artist inspired by the town’s ‘boho’ crowd

Preview: The History Garden by Alistair Kendry, The Stables Art Gallery, The Bourne. Until September 29. Free.

Alistair studied post- graduate at The Slade and is now overseeing A level art at Sussex Coast College, having moved to Hastings from London two years ago. Like many other artists before him he was attracted by the sea, the light, and most of all by the quirky bohemian artistic community that he found here in Hastings and St Leonards. Since moving down his work has taken a dramatic shift and he is working with a greater intensity, with colour, texture and with a more painterly sensibility.

One enduring and most impressive theme is his use of, and passion for, gold leaf and gilt which runs through all his work, a residual impression left on him from his early career as a painter at Royal Worcester.

In this show he has also incorporated his greatest influences, Munch, Lundquist, and Strindberg, and his own Swedish background.
