Angmering hopes this year will be a golden bloom

IT’S a case of third time lucky for determined gardeners in Angmering this week, as South and South-East in Bloom judges paid a visit to the village, on Monday (July 15).

Last year saw dismal weather scuppering the efforts of the Angmering In Bloom committee to scoop its first ever gold award in the regional floral competition.

However, the village managed to achieve its second silver – an impressive feat considering it had been taking part in the event only since 2011.

But as the judges stopped by this week, a more promising mood was in the air – possibly assisted by the scorching summer sun blazing overhead.

Jenny Bos, chairman of Angmering In Bloom, said she was hopeful the village would finally clinch gold for all its efforts.

“We have been working extremely hard throughout the year to really make the village shine,” she said. “It’s been a fantastic effort from everyone.

“We are particularly impressed with the work
by Angmering’s primary schools, pre-schools and the students at The Angmering School and the Lavinia Norfolk Centre.

“So hopefully this year we might get the gold. But we would still be thrilled with a silver gilt.”

The judges were taken on a tour of the village’s beauty spots, starting at the Village Hall, in Station Road.

They stopped by The Angmering School, North Drive, The Square, Water Lane Garden, Weavers Hill and High Street, before heading to The Spotted Cow, Roundstone Lane, the Legacy Garden and the Honey Lane Allotments.

Judge Vince Gradwell said: “The weather last year was truly dismal and it had a real impact. But this year it’s been brilliant.

“The real challenge will be keeping the plants watered. But everything is looking good at the moment. It’s bright and colourful.”

The results will be revealed in September.
