Second case of Covid-19 at Hastings secondary school

A second student at a Hastings secondary school has tested positive for Covid-19.

Hastings Academy, in Rye Road, Hastings, confirmed the news in a letter to parents on Wednesday evening (September 23).

On Thursday (September 24), a spokesman for the University of Brighton Academies Trust, which operates the school, said: “We can confirm a second case of COVID-19 has been recorded at The Hastings Academy.

“The Academy has taken steps to act quickly to reduce the risk to others. We are working closely with Public Health England who has praised us for our swift response on hearing the news of a confirmed case.“

In her letter to parents, principal Hilary Morawska wrote: “We have, today, been made aware that a second member of our school community has tested positive for Covid-19. This case within a different year group.

“We know that you will find this concerning and we are continuing to monitor the situation and we are working closely with Public Health England.

“The small number of children who have been in direct prolonged contact with the confirmed cases will have received an individual letter and will be staying home for 14 days.

“The school remains open and your child should continue to attend if they are well.”

On Monday evening (September 21), the school confirmed its first case of Covid-19.
