Hastings coronavirus infection rate doubles as new data added

Hastings’ Covid-19 infection rate has more than doubled after Public Health England included results from home testing and drive-through centres for the first time.

Until Thursday (July 2), Public Health England had only included the data from positive tests carried out in NHS settings, such as labs and hospitals, known as pillar 1.

The new data – known as pillar 2 – includes results of positive tests carried out at home or at drive-through centres.

The combined data shows Hastings has recorded 126 positive cases of the virus – an increase of 68 since the new data was included.

The rate of infection in Hastings now stands at 135.7 per 100,000 people. Before Thursday, Public Health England’s data showed a rate of 62.5 per 100,000 people. The data shows Hastings now has the seventh-lowest rate of infection in the country.

Across East Sussex, cases have risen from 780 to 1,476, the new data reveals.

– Hastings 126 (up 68) – infection rate 135.7

– Rother 176 (up 67) – infection rate 184.0

– Lewes 356 (up 139) – infection rate 346.5

– Eastbourne 381 (up 216) – infection rate 369.3

– Wealden 437 (up 206) – infection rate 272.8

A total of 2,679 people in West Sussex have tested positive for the virus – an increase of 1,301. In Brighton and Hove, there have been 764 cases – up 273, Public Health England figures show. In Kent, 7,551 people have tested positive for Covid-19.
