Many youngsters have been taking part in the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme over the past four weeks with pupils tasked with completing a ‘social action project’.

One group donated toys and games for the children’s ward at the Conquest Hospital while another raised more than £1,000 for a domestic abuse charity.

Hastings and Rye MP Amber Rudd said she was impressed by their work when she visited some of the students last Friday (August 12).

The four-week NCS scheme sees teams of teens spending two weeks away from home at activity centres and at university halls of residence, learning to be independent.

The second two weeks are spent organising the social action project to help the community.

One group of students from schools across 1066 country raised £1,058.87 for Refuge by holding a rally in the town centre and a 12-hour Olympic-style challenge.

The Olympic challenge, where the students put their bodies to the test in a series of physical events at The Hastings Centre on Monday and Tuesday, made £216.52 in sponsorship and £217.50 worth of clothing, books and toiletries were donated.

They also did a social experiment testing the difference when men are abused by women and visa versa, which showed 86 per cent of passers-by ignored when guys are the victims.

Team leader Louella Collins said: “I’m really proud of our Hastings wave two team two and what they have achieved, a summer well spent.”

Another group, who named themselves Just Peachy, created 60 special boxes for children at the Kipling Ward at the Conquest, funded by a 24 mile cycle and a sponsored leg wax.

Three different types of boxes were created; a calming box, which included a stress ball, hand blankets, personal diary box and colouring books; a creative box full of finger puppets, mosaics and origami; and a puzzle box with a 3D maze, jigsaw puzzles and riddle cards inside.

In addition, the youngsters purchased new toys for the ward including an arts easel, a toy supermarket, learning blocks, a pop up tent with inflatable slide and a tunnel among other things.

In order to fund the project, the team held two sponsored events; a leg wax for the boys carried out by The Green Room, and a 24 mile cycle in aid of the 24 years the Conquest has been open, raising £354.
