Hastings Pier reopens following weather-related delay

Hastings Pier reopened to the public on Monday (July 6) following a delay due to a ‘severe weather’ forecast over the weekend.

The Grade-II listed structure was due to open its gates on Saturday (July 4), the first day many hospitality businesses will reopen to the public in the latest easing of lockdown restrictions.

However, a spokesman for the pier said plans have been pushed back due to the weather forecast.

Instead the pier reopened today (Monday, July 6) at 12pm.

It was carried out by councillor Nigel Sinden, mayor of Hastings, and Tim Wardley, chairman of the National Piers Society.

The reopening came two days after Hastings and Rye MP Sally-Ann Hart visited the pier to view the changes made to how it is operated.

A spokesman for the pier said: "Visitors to the pier will be able to enjoy a whole host of outside facilities including the South Easts largest Beer Garden designed specifically to help visitors enjoy hospitality facilities in open air thus supporting the economy whilst supporting the Government's social distancing guidelines in relation to Covid-19.

"A regular sanitation fogging program has been initiated in all internal visitor facilities."
