Poets look to a
creative future

A group of poets are presenting their work at a new poetry evening.
What's on.What's on.
What's on.

The Spring Field Poets’ event starts at 8pm on Tuesday, October 29, at The Malt Shovel in Springfield Road, Horsham.

The pub has just changed hands and new landlord Sam is keen to promote the arts in the town.

Spokesperson Stella Walls explained that the creative writing project was set up to help people with mental health problems.

The group is now supported by Creative Future, an organisation that aims to inspire marginalised writers and artists.

Stella said: “Creative Future is Brighton based, so nearly all the events are out of our reach.

“About nine months ago I suggested we have our own group in Horsham of poetry and flash reading artists.

“It has taken me this long to find a local pub who would give us a try.”

She continued: “The local group of writers meet every two weeks in the hall of St John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Springfield Road – hence the name.

“Without the generosity of the Priest Father Richard we would not be able to continue as we have no funding to rent a meeting place.

“The Parish has also taken us under its wing and has donated one of the Parish charities to support us for another two years.”

Posters for the group can be seen in Waterstones, Leaders, The Drill Hall and the Library.

Stella added: “So far there are four or five poets and short story writers involved.

“We hope that the Brighton set may join us sometimes and any other groups in the area who would like a slot.”
