Review: Simon Bell, All Saints Church, All Saints Street, August 1

STEEL hands in velvet gloves would be one way of describing the performance by Simon Bell from Winchester at the fourth in the series at All Saints Church.

He played with great dexterity and articulation to a very full audience.

The programme was selected to suit the Father Willis organ to perfection and was much appreciated.

We heard music from Buxtehude, Bach, Vierne, Alain, Stanford, Mendelssohn and Guilmant. The most innovative piece was by Macmillan, which involved a slow, chordal sound on pedals and left hand, with twittering birds in a high register in the right hand.

His encore was something completely different; Chelsea Fair by Goss Custard.

Next Monday’s concert will be by Tom Bell - no relation - beginning at 7.30pm. Tickets at the door for £7.50. For information contact Marion Lovell 01797 222615.
