Ireland’s finest on the way to Rye Arts Festival
Altan fly in from Ireland tomorrow, Saturday September 19, to play an exclusive gig at Rye Arts Festival before returning to Donegal next day.
Altan are one of Ireland’s top traditional bands – the first to sign to a major label, Virgin – and have been bringing Irish language songs and instrument style to a global audience since 1987.
Their last album The Widening Gyre has been seen some change in direction. After nearly 35 years together they worked with Compass co-founder Garry West and fused the traditional Irish music they are known for, namely Donegal fiddling and Gaelic singing traditions, with American roots music, particularly that of the Appalachian bluegrass fiddle.
If you miss their 7.30 pm gig at the Milligan Theatre in Rye, this will be your only chance to catch them this year, as they are touring in Belgium, Germany and Switzerland in the autumn and performing four dates in Japan in December. Tickets, costing £20 for what is bound to one of the highlights of this year’s Rye Arts Festival which runs till September 27, are available online at www.ryeartsfestival.co.uk or call the Box Office on 01797 224442.
