The eight horn playing brothers previously performed with their mother, older brothers and sisters alongside their father Kelan Phil Cohran, co-founder and trumpet player for the Sun Ra’s Arkestra.

The brothers were raised in a house where music was a constant element of their lives. Phil Cohran’s Circle of Sound held rehearsals in the living room and put on live shows in the adjacent loft/theatre called the Sun Ark. The brothers were obligated to wake at 6am and play their horns before and after school. As adolescents, they played around Chicago as the Phil Cohran Youth Ensemble, performing for the likes of Harold Washington, Nelson Mandela, and other prominent figures of the day.

As the brothers grew up, some set their horns aside for a while but after various life events they decided to pick their instruments back up. In 1999, the brothers took to the subways of Chicago and played their music. Shortly after, they formed a full-fledged, 8-piece brass ensemble and by 2004 recorded their first project Flipside. They have worked with Mos Def, Aquilla Sadalla, The Recipe, Nomadic Massive, Tony Allen, Wu Tang Clan, De La Soul, Prince, Femi Kuti, Gorillaz and the B52’s and now they’re performing their eclectic mix of hip-hop, jazz, funk, rock, calypso and gypsy right here in Hastings.

Tickets cost £13.50 in advance, or £15 on the door, and under 16’s are welcome but need accompanying by an adult.
