Artist opens her new project in The SPACE.
Artist Sharon Haward's installation '˜PEEK' opens at The SPACE in St Johns Road, St Leonards, today from 6-7.30pm
Christine Gist, curator for The SPACE, said: “Sharon’s project is the first in the 2016 series of artists’ installations and events which will transform the site through October. We hope this dramatic work will be enjoyed by the local community and passers-by who discover Haward’s installation.”
The billowing white voile structure echoes the curtains seen in the residents’ windows opposite The SPACE.
Sharon Haward commented: “Our sense of home is reinforced by our ability to look out of the window at the garden or the street. To see and be seen or peek out, unseen. Separated by flimsy stuff, we might feel safe and secure on the one side and on the other side exposed. In the context of this site, the curtains here flee their passive role as mediators between inside and outside, they are set free to animate and transform the everyday reality of The SPACE, inviting an expanded reading of the site.”
She is based in Hastings and her projects and collaborations over the last ten years include created forestablished galleries and art spaces, public spaces to underground sites and abandoned buildings. Haward has worked with artists and curators around Europe to produce installations, projections and interventions in a range of abandoned, empty and public spaces and buildings.
Weather permitting, The SPACE will be open on Saturdays from 1-5pm but the installation is always clearly visible from dawn to dusk.
‘PEEK’ is supported using funding from The National Lottery through Arts Council England’s Grants for the Arts, Hastings Borough Council and East Sussex Arts Partnership.
