If there was a general election tomorrow, who would win in Hastings?
Would Michael Foster retain the seat for Labour, or would Amber Rudd scoop it for the Tories?

Observer Editor Peter Lindsey has been talking to them both about their chances.

In some areas this will be very close to call. It may depend on the postal votes!

Hopefully policies for the future made believable by track record of delivery would win it - rather than a 'scoop' by individual personalities.

If the records of Foster's NewLabour and Rudd's Old Tories were to to be taken into account by a knowledgeable electorate, they would both be rejected.

Foster has failed to be honest on so may issues, fromhis secretarial costs to his votes on Iraq.

Rudd is just a thick "little rich girl" who is after the power and influence for her wealthy chums and ex-hubby.

Lets hope that the electorate "wise up" and boot them both out of town. Poor "sad" Martin may also go home once his boss became jobless.

No doubt the highly esteemed Peter Lindsey will enlighten us all with his analysis/albeit prophecies in this week's installment of the Hastings Observer!

Amber makes some good points at the interview. From Michael we have the usual spin.

.Our MP says pensioners are better off under Labour. Try explaining that to the pensioners crippled by practically the highest Council Tax in the country when related to salaries/pensions.

Michael says we are better off. It is a fact that the gap between rich and poor has increased over the last 11 years.

Our MP speaks of the highest employment figures for years. What he doesn’t say is that over the last year virtually all the new jobs have been filled by immigrants. In fact we have a record and increasing level of young people claiming incapacity benefits. ( Government figures..not mine. )

He speaks of money spent on services as being high …but does not mention the the gross waste of public money ie. NHS computer system , GP’s contract payments , unelected quangos. A little closer to home the £500000 recycling fiasco.

Michael also seems believe that we are doing rather well. Recession is around the corner …don’t try to hide it ! Britain has been prosperous because of low world interest rates and high levels of liquidity . Not because of the government. In fact industrial red tape is destroying industry as is the high level of taxation, both personal and industrial. A top company ..Shire Pharma has recently announced plans to move offshore because of high taxation.

Despite expenditure on education we are producing illiterate and innumerate students ….one of the highest in the leading developed world.

And don’t’ forget the illegal war in Iraq which is costing billions each year.

Yes the Hastings Electorate is fed up with this government !

Foster OUT!,

St Leonards 23/04/2008 20:13:01
Some excellent points, Darryl. I must say Foster looks to have aged several years in the past few weeks - I guess it can't be easy knowing your cushy MP job and expenses are drawing to a close. He looks like he needs a good long holiday - the residents of Hastings are just waiting to give him one at the next General Election. And he'll have to pay for that one himself.
Good news though that Brown has had to cave in to pressure from the opposition on the 10p tax rate. He has now been exposed for the incompetent oaf that he is. Only problem is that he will now have to find several billion quid from elsewhere - middle classes battered again? Or tax the rich - no way! Or cuts on the way? New Labour "socialists" cutting the NHS? Or what?

FOSTER OUT!! BROWN OUT!! DARLING OUT!!! NEW LABOUR ARE ROASTING IN THEIR OWN FAT!

How much has Gordon Brown hit hard working families with taxes?
In April, the Government increased tax on some of the lowest paid workers. The Government have confirmed that 5.3 million families will lose out because of this. 1 in 5 families will be worse off.

From the perspective of young people under age drinking and binge drinking has increased. The N.H.S is treating more and more younger people with liver related ilnesses which lead to long term health problems.
We have the highest incarceration rate for young people than in the whole of Europe. New Labour Government. Crime figures are spiralling out of crime and the fear of crime has increased, - New Labour.
There are a lack of facilities for young people.
The young people are not given a voice.
This Government, speaking of having a voice, has the worst record for eroding civil liberties and freedom of speech.
The Government and our illustrious M.P have voted in favour of I.D cards.

Peter L ...Keep forgetting to mention. Super idea to have these debates on the Web. They can only help people to become more aware of the issues , encourage debate and hopfully vote.

I agree with Darryl that the debates are interesting. I only wish the Observer would include the Liberal Democrats. When the Conservative and Parties say such similar things on a range of topics, it's important to have an alternative view. Come on Peter - what about it?
