The polls opened this morning for the council elections and the Observer was there to capture the first few voters.
We spoke to residents about what they see as the key issues in today's electoral battle and asked people which of the three main parties they expected to come out on top.

Councillor Dominic Sabetian was also on hand to talk about his hopes for the day and LibDem leader cllr Richard Stevens spoke to the Observer about his party's expectations - including his thoughts on newcomer Margaret Williams' contest against council leader Peter Pragnell.

Click on our video to see what they had to say and be sure to keep checking www.hastingsobserver.co.uk for regular updates on the election throughout the day and night.

Who do you think will come out on top tonight? What outcome would you like to see? Leave us your comments below.

Darryl,

I believe that people will vote to keep Labour out for the following reasons :

Compulsory purchase of the pier would shoot up council taxes to unaffordable levels and lead to ever increasing future expenditure and hence higher Council Taxes. Labour’s record is some 99% of a council tax increase under their stewardship.

The electorate realise that the Government’s Council Tax grant ,each year, has been practically the lowest in the country …ensuring that we now have virtually the highest Council Tax related to salary in the whole country. People can no longer afford any more !

People will vote for a more caring party as this is an impoverished area. Note the 10% tax band fiasco !

The electorate are sick and tired of the dead end leadership of Gordon Brown and his supporters who have raised taxes , many through stealth, and have dismally failed to deliver on services …ie.. NHS, Education , Crime etc.

Hasting’s people are also sick of spin …Post office …10% tax band fiaso…maternity provision etc.

After the £500000 Labour Re-Cycling fiasco …does anyone want to risk such waste again ?

Let’s hope that we get a good turnout this year.
