Still running after 10 'Gran'tastic years

ELSIE Hewitt will be celebrating 10 years since she had treatment for breast cancer, when she runs this year's Cancer UK Race For Life.

Elsie, 62, was diagnosed in May 1998, a year after her husband Peter suffered a brain tumour.

Elsie, who lives in Fletcher Avenue, St Leonards, said: "My granddaughter Jasmine was one year old when I was diagnosed. I kept a photo of her when I was having treatment, and I said then that I would see her married, or when she was 20 years old."

Now fit and healthy, Elsie is a gym member at Bannatynes, and also plays golf at Cooden Beach, but an infection after her breast cancer treatment left her with a frozen shoulder, and she was told she would never play golf again.

She said: "I went swimming, and I could only use one arm to do breast stroke, and I started swimming in circles! But then my hand started working, then my arm. Now I can do breaststroke and play golf."

The grandmother-of-five will be running the race on her own. She said: "I haven't run it before, I just thought that it was 10 years, and I need to do something.

"My family are so proud. They are just amazed."
