Snooker star suffers setback
Mark Davis' excellent season on the main world snooker tour suffered a setback on Thursday.
The St Leonards cueman was beaten 5-2 by James McBain in round two of the China Open Qualifiers at Pontin's Prestatyn.
The first four frames were shared, but McBain reeled off three in succession after the interval to set up a third round clash with Dave Gilbert.
It marked a reversal in fortune for Davis, 36, because he was a 5-3 winner when the two locked horns in round two of Shanghai Masters Qualifying back in early September.
Remarkably, they could meet again in round two of the Welsh Open Qualifiers on Wednesday February 4 if McBain comes through a first round tie with Aditya Mehta.
Davis is 58th on the official rankings and 42nd on the provisional list, whereas McBain is 71st on the official rankings and 84th on the provisional list.
Former B&H Championship and snooker.de Open winner Davis had won 13 matches in the season's first five ranking events, a sequence which began with a run to the last 16 of the Northern Ireland Trophy during August.
