Sailing club hosts county regatta
Hastings & St Leonards Sailing Club played host to the East Sussex Coastal Sailing Federation Youth Regatta.
Twenty-two people took part representing the host club, Bexhill SC, Pevensey Bay SC, Eastbourne Sovereign SC and Newhaven & Seaford SC, all sailing Toppers.
The wind was blowing force three to four - stronger than forecast - and mainly from the south west for the three races on Saturday.
Race one was delayed due to fog banks coming through, but eventually got under way from a committee boat (kindly supplied by Graham and Karen Howe) start.
A quite well spread out fleet was led home by Oliver Greber (Pevensey Bay) from William Bovington (Newhaven & Seaford) with Tom Richardson (Hastings & St Leonards) third.
Race two started without seven competitors as the wind was rising. Greber again took the honours with Bovington second and Richardson third in a shortened race.
Most of the competitors were on the water for the final race after lunch, but the wind was gusting at force five after one lap and several boats were capsizing. Although there were four safety boats on the water, it was thought prudent to cancel the race.
Results - individuals: 1 Oliver Greber (Pevensey Bay) 2pts, 2 William Bovington (Newhaven & Seaford) 4, 3 Tom Richardson (Hastings & St Leonards) 6, 4 Louis Gorringe (Newhaven & Seaford) 8, 5 B. Watts (Bexhill) 12, 6 Greg Fowler (Pevensey Bay) 12, 7 Lev Kokunko (Hastings & St Leonards) 16. Clubs: 1 Newhaven & Seaford 82, 2 Pevensey Bay 108, 3 Bexhill 129, 4 Hastings & St Leonards 160, 5 Eastbourne Sovereign 230.
Eleven boats - three Lasers, three Miracles, two Merlin Rockets, one Magno, one RS500 and a Dart 16 - took part in the Nautilus Handicap at Hastings & St Leonards Sailing Club on Sunday.
Don Terry and crew Simon Terry (Merlin Rocket) took line honours from William Bovington and Tom Richardson (RS500), with John Parmenter and Richard Parmenter (Merlin Rocket) third.
Fourth-placed Martin Watson (Laser) was the only other person to complete the full three laps as the rest of the fleet finished after two in a very light and decreasing south easterly breeze.
Bovington and Richardson were unlucky to drift onto a mark, and had to complete a penalty turn. The afternoon race was cancelled as there was no wind.
The Terrys still came out on top after handicap had been applied, while the Parmenters were promoted to second and Watson to third, with Bovington and Richardson demoted to fourth.
